The Instagram analytics glossary
Every Instagram Reels metric that matters, defined in plain English. Start with a term below, then see it in action on any public profile with Statly.
View-to-Follower RatioVTFR
Average views divided by an account's follower count. It measures how far an account's Reels travel beyond its own audience.
Why it matters: A VTFR above 1 means Reels regularly reach people who don't follow the account, a sign the algorithm is distributing the content. It's a truer measure of reach than follower count.
See VTFR in the Audit dashboard →Reach Consistency IndexRCI
The ratio of an account's median views to its average views. It shows whether reach is steady across posts or carried by a few viral hits.
Why it matters: A high RCI means dependable reach on every post; a low RCI means a handful of outliers are inflating the average.
See it in Audit →High Performance FactorHPF
How often an account's Reels exceed its own follower count in views.
Why it matters: It captures how frequently content escapes the follower graph, rather than how big a single hit was.
Use it for competitor research →Breakout Performance RateBPR
The share of an account's Reels that beat three times its median views.
Why it matters: It quantifies how often an account produces a genuine breakout, not just steady content.
Find breakouts with Trend Finder →Engagement Stability IndexESI
How consistent engagement is from Reel to Reel across an account.
Why it matters: A high ESI means reliable engagement; a low one means one or two posts are propping up the average.
Why brands check ESI →Baseline Reliability RatioBRR
How close an account's typical Reel sits to its own baseline, reflecting the strength of its worst posts, not just its best.
Why it matters: It separates creators with a dependable floor from those carried by rare spikes.
Vetting creators with BRR →Duration PayoffDP
Which Reel length earns the most engagement for a specific account.
Why it matters: Optimal length varies by account, so Duration Payoff finds it from the data instead of a generic rule.
See it in Audit →Outlier Score
How far a single Reel beat its own account's median views, expressed as a multiple such as 10x.
Why it matters: A Reel at 10x an account's normal is worth studying. Measuring against the account's own baseline keeps small accounts' breakouts visible.
Surface outliers with Trend Finder →Engagement rateER
The share of viewers who interacted with a Reel, usually likes plus comments divided by views or followers, times 100.

Why it matters: A quick read on how well content resonates relative to audience size.
Read the full guide →Comment rate
Average comments divided by followers or views, times 100.
Why it matters: Comments are a stronger signal of engagement than likes and often line up with wider distribution.
Read the full guide →Views (plays)
The number of times a Reel was played, including replays and plays from people who don't follow the account.
Why it matters: On Reels, views are the primary reach signal because Instagram distributes them well beyond followers.
Scan any profile's views →Reach
The number of unique accounts that saw a Reel.
Why it matters: Reach separates unique audience from total plays; the two diverge when replays are high.
Median vs average views
The median is the middle value of an account's Reels; the average is the mean. One viral post inflates the average but not the median.
Why it matters: Comparing the two reveals whether an account's numbers are typical or skewed by a single outlier. Statly always shows both.
See both in Audit →Breakout (viral Reel)
A Reel that significantly outperforms its own account's average and median views.
Why it matters: Measured against the account's own baseline, a small account's breakout is a real signal even if its raw numbers are modest.
